QMM mine 33kV OHL power transfer capacity assessment

Cliff & Tony Energy in partnership with Proconics conducted a power transfer assessment of the existing 33kV OHL at the QMM mine. The mine located in Madagascar is supplied from diesel generators and intends to integrate a hybrid (solar, wind and BESS) energy solution to achieve higher levels of renewables and allow expensive diesel generators to be taken out of service.

Part of the hybrid (solar and wind) is planned to be on one end of the 33kV OHL while the BESS will be on the load side. The first phase of our scope entailed:

    • Update the mine's network model
    • Conduct load flow studies
    • Determine the 33kV OHL transfer capability with the existing power factor
    • Determine the 33kV OHL power transfer capacity with the planned power factor correction
    • Determine the dynamic reactive power compensation to achieve maximum power transfer
